Your brain is amazing. But it has some sneaky glitches.

Your brain is the most powerful machine in the known universe. It keeps you breathing, helps you learn new things, and lets you imagine entire worlds that don't exist. Pretty impressive, right?

But here's the thing: your brain also cheats.

Not on purpose. Your brain processes millions of pieces of information every single day, and to keep up, it takes shortcuts. Scientists call these shortcuts heuristics. Most of the time, they work great. They help you make fast decisions without having to think about every little thing.

What Are Brain Bugs?

Sometimes those shortcuts go wrong. Your brain takes a quick path and lands on the wrong answer — and the sneaky part? It feels completely right.

Think of it this way:
Your brain is like an amazing supercomputer that runs incredibly fast. But sometimes the software has bugs. It processes information using shortcuts that usually get the right answer — but not always. Those bugs in your thinking are called cognitive biases.
In Think Again! (Book 1), we learned about tricks people use in arguments. Brain Bugs are different — these are tricks your brain plays on you, all by itself. No opponent needed. Your own brain is the trickster!

This book covers 12 brain bugs that affect everyone — kids, adults, scientists, athletes, even geniuses. The first step to beating them is learning to spot them. Once you see the glitch, you can debug your thinking.

Chapter 1

Confirmation Bias

"I Knew It All Along!"

What Is It?

Confirmation bias is when your brain only notices information that agrees with what you already believe — and ignores or dismisses everything that doesn't. It's like wearing tinted glasses: everything looks the color you expect.

Real-Life Brain Bugs

AT SCHOOL

Mia: "I'm terrible at math. I got another problem wrong — see?"
Teacher: "Mia, you got 18 out of 20 right!"
Mia: "Yeah, but those two wrong ones prove I'm bad at it."

Mia's brain zooms in on the 2 wrong answers and ignores the 18 correct ones. She already believes she's bad at math, so her brain hunts for evidence that agrees.

WITH FRIENDS

You: "I think Aiden doesn't like me. He walked right past me in the hall."
Friend: "He waved at you at lunch and asked you to play basketball yesterday."
You: "He was probably just being polite."

Once you decide someone doesn't like you, your brain collects every small clue that agrees and explains away every clue that doesn't.

ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Kid 1: "This phone brand is the best. I keep seeing posts about how awesome it is."
Kid 2: "That's because you follow accounts that love that brand. You never follow the ones that review competitors."

Social media algorithms feed you more of what you already like. Your feed becomes an echo chamber that makes your existing opinions feel like facts.

ABOUT SPORTS

Fan: "The ref is totally biased against our team! That was a terrible call!"
Other fan: "They made the same call against the other team twice, and you cheered both times."

When you're rooting for your team, you notice every bad call against them and ignore every bad call in their favor. Same game, completely different experience.

Why Your Brain Does This

Your brain LOVES being right. It feels good to have your beliefs confirmed, like getting a little reward. So your brain automatically filters information to give you that "I knew it!" feeling. It's faster and more comfortable than actually questioning what you believe.

How to Catch Yourself

Ask: "Am I only looking at evidence that agrees with me? What would someone who disagrees point to?" Actively search for information that challenges your belief. If your opinion can survive that challenge, it's probably a strong one.

Try It!

You're convinced your school's basketball team is the best in the district. You keep track of every game they win but forget about the three games they lost. When a friend mentions those losses, you say, "Those don't count — the other teams just got lucky."

Chapter 2

Anchoring Bias

"The First Number Wins"

What Is It?

Anchoring bias is when you get stuck on the first piece of information you hear (the "anchor"), and everything after that gets judged compared to it — even when the anchor is totally random or irrelevant.

Real-Life Brain Bugs

AT THE STORE

Sign: "Was $80. NOW $40!"
You: "Wow, what a deal!"
Smart Shopper: "But is the shirt actually worth $40? Or did they just put a high fake price to make $40 feel cheap?"

The $80 is the anchor. Your brain compares everything to it, so $40 feels like a steal — even if the shirt was never worth $80 in the first place.

IN CLASS

Teacher: "How many countries are in Africa? Is it more or less than 10?"
Student: "Hmm, I'll guess 25."
Teacher: "Now, different class — more or less than 100?"
Other student: "I'll guess 75."
Answer: 54 countries.

The first number the teacher said (10 or 100) pulled each student's guess in that direction. The anchor changed their answer even though it was random!

AT A FUNDRAISER

Sign: "Suggested donation: $50"
You: "I was going to give $5, but now $5 feels stingy..."

That "suggested" number is the anchor. It makes you adjust your donation upward, even if $5 was perfectly generous.

ABOUT GRADES

You: "I got a 72 on the first test and an 85 on the second. That's a huge improvement!"
Friend: "I got a 95 on the first and an 85 on the second. I bombed it."

Same score (85), but it feels totally different depending on the anchor (your first score). Your friend is disappointed because 95 set a high anchor.

Why Your Brain Does This

Your brain needs a starting point when it doesn't know the answer. So it latches onto whatever number or fact it hears first and adjusts from there. The problem? It usually doesn't adjust enough. The anchor has a magnetic pull that's hard to escape.

How to Catch Yourself

Ask: "Where did this number come from? Is it actually meaningful, or is it just the first thing I heard?" Before looking at the price tag, decide what something is worth to YOU first.

Try It!

A friend says, "I heard the new video game costs $70." Later you see it's actually $50 and think, "That's cheap!" But last month, you thought $50 for a game was expensive. What changed?

What's the anchor? Did the game's actual value change, or just your perception?

Chapter 3

Availability Heuristic

"If I Can Picture It, It Must Be Common"

What Is It?

The availability heuristic is when you judge how likely something is based on how easily you can remember an example. If it pops into your mind quickly, your brain assumes it happens all the time.

ABOUT FLYING

Kid: "I'm scared of flying. Plane crashes are SO dangerous."
Parent: "You're much more likely to get hurt in a car accident than a plane crash."
Kid: "That can't be right. Plane crashes are all over the news!"

Plane crashes make dramatic, memorable news stories, so they come to mind easily. Car accidents happen way more often but don't make the evening news. Your brain confuses "easy to remember" with "happens a lot."

AT SCHOOL

Student: "I always get picked last for group projects."
Friend: "You got picked first last Tuesday and second on Thursday."
Student: "Huh. I guess I only remember the bad times."

The painful memory of being picked last is vivid and emotional, so it's easy to recall. The times you were picked first? Your brain didn't bother filing those away as strongly.

ABOUT ANIMALS

Kid: "Sharks are the most dangerous animal in the world!"
Fact: Mosquitoes kill roughly 700,000 people per year. Sharks kill about 5. Cows kill more people than sharks do.

Shark attack movies and news stories are dramatic and memorable. Nobody makes a horror movie called "Mosquito Week." So your brain thinks sharks are a bigger threat.

AFTER A GAME

Player: "I keep missing the easy shots! I'm terrible!"
Coach: "You made 7 out of 10 today. But the 3 misses were all open shots, so they stick in your memory."

Easy shots you missed feel embarrassing, so they're vivid in your memory. The routine shots you made blend together and fade away.

Why Your Brain Does This

Your brain uses memory as a shortcut for probability. If something is easy to remember, your brain assumes it must happen often. But memorable and common are NOT the same thing. Dramatic, scary, or emotional events are easy to recall even if they're rare.

How to Catch Yourself

Ask: "Am I basing this on actual data, or just on what I can easily picture?" Look for real numbers and statistics instead of trusting your gut feeling about how common something is.

Try It!

After seeing a news story about a house fire, you suddenly worry your house might catch fire tonight. You never thought about it before. Your house hasn't changed. The news story did.

Chapter 4

Sunk Cost Fallacy

"But I Already Started!"

What Is It?

The sunk cost fallacy is when you keep doing something because you've already put time, money, or effort into it — even when quitting would actually be the smarter choice. The resources you've already spent are "sunk" — they're gone no matter what.

Real-Life Brain Bugs

AT THE MOVIES

You: "This movie is SO boring."
Friend: "Let's leave!"
You: "No way. We already paid $15 for the tickets. We have to stay."

That $15 is gone whether you stay or leave. Staying means you waste the money AND two hours of your life on a bad movie. Leaving only wastes the money.

VIDEO GAMES

Gamer: "I've been grinding this game for 200 hours. I don't even enjoy it anymore."
Friend: "Then play something else?"
Gamer: "I can't quit now! Think of all the hours I've put in!"

Those 200 hours are gone forever. Spending ANOTHER 200 miserable hours doesn't get them back. It just adds more wasted time.

AT DINNER

Kid: "I'm full. Can I stop eating?"
Parent: "Finish your plate! That food cost money!"
Wise response: "The food is paid for either way. Eating when I'm full just makes me feel sick."

Overeating doesn't un-spend the money. The food's cost is a sunk cost whether it goes in your stomach or in a container for tomorrow.

ABOUT A BOOK

Student: "I'm 150 pages into this book and it's terrible."
Friend: "Why are you still reading it?"
Student: "Because I've already read 150 pages! I can't stop now!"

Those 150 pages are gone. The only question that matters is: "Will reading the REST make me happy?" If not, pick up a better book!

Why Your Brain Does This

Your brain hates waste. Quitting feels like admitting that all that time and effort was wasted, and that's painful. So your brain tricks you into continuing — even when continuing wastes even MORE. It's like digging a hole deeper because you don't want to admit you're in the wrong spot.

How to Catch Yourself

Ask: "If I were starting fresh right now — with zero time or money invested — would I choose to do this?" If the answer is no, the smart move might be to stop.

Try It!

You've spent three weeks building a science fair project about volcanoes, but you just had a MUCH better idea about robotics. The fair is in two weeks. Do you stick with the volcano project because you've already started, or switch to the better idea?

Chapter 5

Dunning-Kruger Effect

"I'm Basically an Expert"

What Is It?

The Dunning-Kruger Effect is a brain bug with two sides: people who know very little about something tend to be overconfident about their ability, while people who know a lot tend to underestimate themselves. A little knowledge makes you think you're an expert. A lot of knowledge shows you how much you still don't know.

Real-Life Brain Bugs

IN THE KITCHEN

Kid: (after making scrambled eggs once) "Cooking is easy. I'm basically a chef now. I could run a restaurant."
Actual chef: (after 20 years of training) "I'm still learning something new every day."

The kid doesn't know enough to know what they don't know. The chef has learned SO much that they can see the enormous ocean of knowledge still ahead.

LEARNING GUITAR

Week 1: "I learned three chords! I'm getting pretty good!"
Month 6: "Okay, guitar is WAY harder than I thought."
Year 3: "I'm decent, but the more I learn, the more I realize how much there is to know."

This is the classic Dunning-Kruger curve: confidence spikes early (when you don't know enough to know what you're missing), then crashes as you realize the real complexity, then slowly builds again on solid ground.

IN VIDEO GAMES

New player: "This game is easy. I beat the first three levels. I'm way better than average."
Ranked player: "I'm in the top 5% and I still make tons of mistakes."

The beginner hasn't faced the real challenges yet. The expert has, and knows how far the skill ceiling goes.

ABOUT A SCHOOL TOPIC

Student: "I watched one YouTube video about space. Ask me anything!"
Astrophysicist: "I've studied the universe for 30 years and I still have more questions than answers."

One video gives you just enough knowledge to feel confident. Thirty years of study shows you how vast the unknown is.

Why Your Brain Does This

When you know very little, you lack the knowledge to judge your own skill accurately. You don't know what you don't know! As you learn more, you start seeing the gaps. Experts have learned enough to recognize just how complex the subject really is.

How to Catch Yourself

Ask: "How much time have I actually spent learning this? Could there be a LOT I haven't been exposed to yet?" The most dangerous moment is right after you learn the basics — that's when overconfidence peaks.

Try It!

Your friend watched a 10-minute video about investing and now says, "I know exactly how the stock market works. It's not that complicated." Meanwhile, professional investors with decades of experience say the market is unpredictable.

Chapter 6

Halo Effect

"Pretty Must Mean Perfect"

What Is It?

The halo effect is when you assume someone is good at everything because they're good at one thing — or because they're attractive, popular, or famous. One positive trait creates a "halo" that makes everything else about them glow too.

Real-Life Brain Bugs

AT SCHOOL

Student: "Jaylen should be class president. He's the star of the basketball team!"
Friend: "But what are his ideas for the school? Being good at basketball doesn't mean he'd be a good leader."

Jaylen's basketball talent creates a halo. People assume he must also be a great leader, organizer, and decision-maker — without any evidence for those skills.

ABOUT CELEBRITIES

Kid: "That singer says we should all eat this new superfood. She's so talented, she must know about nutrition too!"
Parent: "She's talented at singing. That has nothing to do with food science."

Being talented or famous in one area doesn't make someone an expert in everything. But the halo makes us FEEL like it does.

IN A GROUP PROJECT

Teacher: "Who should present your project?"
Group: "Emma! She made the best poster!"
Reality: Emma is amazing at art but terrified of public speaking. Marcus is a great speaker but nobody thought of him.

Emma's art skills created a halo that made everyone assume she'd also be the best presenter. Different skills!

ABOUT APPEARANCES

Study result: In experiments, teachers give higher grades to essays when they think the writer is attractive. Same essay, different grade — just because of a photo clipped to the front.

This is real! Studies show that attractiveness creates a halo that affects how people judge your work, intelligence, and even your honesty. Unfair? Absolutely. But knowing about it helps you fight it.

Why Your Brain Does This

Your brain likes simple stories. "Good at one thing = good at everything" is a nice, tidy shortcut. Building a complete, accurate picture of someone takes effort, so your brain paints with a broad brush instead.

How to Catch Yourself

Ask: "Am I assuming this person is good at X just because they're good at Y? What actual evidence do I have for each skill separately?"

Try It!

A new kid joins your class. He's tall, confident, and wears really cool clothes. Without knowing anything else about him, half the class assumes he must be smart, athletic, and funny. Two weeks later, it turns out he's average at sports and pretty quiet.

What created the halo? What assumptions did people make, and why were they wrong?

Chapter 7

Negativity Bias

"The Bad Stuff Sticks"

What Is It?

Negativity bias is when bad experiences, criticism, and negative events hit your brain MUCH harder than equally positive ones. One insult can outweigh ten compliments. One bad day can overshadow a great week.

Real-Life Brain Bugs

AT A PERFORMANCE

After a school play:
Parent 1: "You were amazing!"
Parent 2: "Wonderful performance!"
Friend: "You stumbled on that one line in Act 2."
You, at 3 AM: (replaying that one stumble over and over)

Ten people said you were great. One person mentioned a mistake. Guess which one your brain decides to replay on an endless loop? The negative one, every time.

ONLINE

Your post: Gets 50 likes and 2 mean comments.
Your brain: Completely ignores the 50 likes and obsesses over the 2 mean comments for hours.

Researchers have found it takes roughly FIVE positive interactions to cancel out ONE negative one. Your brain weights negativity about 5x heavier.

ON VACATION

Family trip: 6 amazing days of fun, swimming, and great food. On day 7, it rains and the hotel loses your reservation.
Six months later: "Remember that trip where the hotel messed everything up?"

Six great days reduced to one bad memory. Your brain files the negative experience in bold, underlined, highlighted text while the good days get filed in tiny print.

ABOUT A TEACHER

Student: "Mr. Garcia is so mean. He gave me a C on my essay."
Friend: "Didn't he also stay after school for an hour to help you with your science project?"
Student: "...oh yeah. I forgot about that."

The one negative interaction (the C grade) overwrites multiple positive ones in your memory.

Why Your Brain Does This

In ancient times, paying extra attention to dangers kept you alive. Remembering where the predator was mattered more than remembering where the pretty flowers were. Your brain evolved to prioritize threats. The problem? It still does this even when the "threat" is just a mean comment or a bad grade.

How to Catch Yourself

Ask: "Am I focusing on one bad thing while ignoring many good things?" Try writing down three good things that happened today alongside the one bad thing. Seeing them side by side helps your brain recalibrate.

Try It!

You present a project in class. The teacher says, "Great research, clear presentation, nice visuals. One suggestion — slow down a bit when you speak." You walk out of class feeling bad. Why?

Count the positives vs. the negatives in that feedback. Why does your brain focus on the one suggestion?

Chapter 8

Status Quo Bias

"But We've Always Done It This Way!"

What Is It?

Status quo bias is the tendency to prefer things to stay the same, even when change would make things better. Your brain treats the current situation as the default "safe" option and views any change as risky.

Real-Life Brain Bugs

AT LUNCH

Friend: "Want to try the new Thai restaurant?"
You: "Nah, let's just go to the same pizza place we always go to."
Friend: "You said last time the pizza was getting boring!"
You: "Yeah, but at least I KNOW it's okay."

Even when you're bored with the current option, your brain prefers the "known okay" over the "possibly great, possibly bad."

IN A CLASSROOM

Teacher: "I'm rearranging the seats."
Entire class: "Nooooo!"
Two weeks later: "Actually, my new seat is great. I can see the board better."

The initial reaction to ANY change is resistance. But once the change happens, people often prefer the new arrangement. The fear of change was worse than the change itself.

ABOUT TECHNOLOGY

Kid: "I hate when apps update! Why do they keep changing things?"
Friend: "Remember when you hated the LAST update? Now you love those features."
Kid: "...true."

Every app update gets complaints. A month later, most people love the changes. Your brain resists change first and adjusts later.

ABOUT ROUTINES

Parent: "How about we do family game night on Fridays instead of Saturdays?"
Kid: "But Saturdays is when we ALWAYS do it!"
Parent: "We only started doing it on Saturdays because that's when Grandma used to visit. She moved two years ago."

The original reason for the routine is gone, but the routine feels permanent. "We've always done it this way" is one of the most powerful brain bugs there is.

Why Your Brain Does This

Change requires mental energy. Your brain has to think about new possibilities, weigh risks, and adapt. Sticking with what you know takes zero effort. So your brain whispers, "Why risk it?" — even when the current situation isn't that great.

How to Catch Yourself

Ask: "Am I keeping things the same because it's actually the best option, or just because it's familiar?" Imagine you were choosing for the first time. Would you still pick the current way?

Try It!

Your family has gone to the same vacation spot for five years. Everyone says it's "fine" but nobody is excited about it anymore. Your sister suggests a new place that looks awesome, but everyone says, "Let's just do what we always do."

Is "what we always do" being chosen because it's the best, or just because it's familiar? What brain bug is at work?

Chapter 9

Spotlight Effect

"Everyone Is Staring at Me!"

What Is It?

The spotlight effect is when you overestimate how much other people notice your appearance, mistakes, or behavior. You feel like there's a spotlight on you, but in reality, most people are way too busy thinking about themselves to notice.

Real-Life Brain Bugs

AT SCHOOL

You: "I can't go to school. I have a tiny pimple on my forehead. EVERYONE will notice."
Reality: You go to school. Nobody mentions it. Nobody even looks at your forehead. Your best friend didn't notice until you pointed it out.

That pimple felt like it had its own spotlight and sound effects. In reality, other people are thinking about their OWN pimples.

IN THE CAFETERIA

You: (trips while carrying a lunch tray) "OH NO. Everyone saw that. They're all laughing. I can never show my face here again."
Reality: Maybe 3 people out of 200 noticed. They forgot about it within 10 seconds.

In a famous experiment, students wore embarrassing T-shirts to class. They guessed that about half their classmates noticed. The actual number? Less than 25%. People notice you about HALF as much as you think.

ABOUT CLOTHES

Kid: "I wore the same shirt on Monday and Wednesday this week. People probably think I'm gross."
Friend: "I literally have no idea what you wore on Monday."

You remember every outfit you wear. Other people don't keep a mental catalog of your wardrobe. They're worried about their own.

AFTER A MISTAKE

You: (called the teacher "Mom" in class) "That's it. My life is over. I'm going to be known as the kid who called the teacher Mom."
Three days later: Nobody remembers. Half the class has done it too.

Your brain replays your embarrassments like a highlight reel. Other people's brains are busy replaying THEIR OWN embarrassments.

Why Your Brain Does This

You are the center of YOUR world. You experience everything from your own perspective, so naturally, you assume everyone else is focused on you too. But here's the secret: everyone else is the center of THEIR world. They're thinking about themselves, not you.

How to Catch Yourself

Ask: "Can I remember what shirt my friend wore two days ago? Can I remember the last embarrassing thing someone else did?" If you can't remember theirs, they probably can't remember yours either.

Try It!

You give a class presentation and accidentally say "um" about 15 times. You spend the rest of the day convinced everyone thinks you're a terrible speaker. When you ask three friends about it after school, two didn't count your "ums" at all, and one says, "I thought you did great!"

Chapter 10

Planning Fallacy

"It'll Only Take Five Minutes!"

What Is It?

The planning fallacy is the tendency to underestimate how long tasks will take, how much they'll cost, and how many things could go wrong — even when you've been wrong about this exact same thing many times before.

Real-Life Brain Bugs

HOMEWORK

9:00 PM: "I just have to write a short essay. It'll take 20 minutes, tops."
9:20 PM: "Okay, I need to do a little research first."
10:15 PM: "Wait, I need a bibliography?"
11:30 PM: "...this was supposed to take 20 minutes."

You estimated the best-case scenario where everything went perfectly. Your brain forgot about research, formatting, spell-checking, and the 20 minutes you spent looking for a snack.

GETTING READY

Parent: "We need to leave in 10 minutes!"
Kid: "I'm almost ready! Just need to brush my teeth!"
30 minutes later: Still looking for matching socks.

"Just brush my teeth" turned into brushing teeth, changing clothes, finding shoes, going back for a water bottle, and looking for the phone. Every small task has hidden sub-tasks.

GROUP PROJECTS

Monday: "The project is due Friday. We have TONS of time."
Wednesday: "We should probably start soon."
Thursday night: "WHY DIDN'T WE START EARLIER?!"

Groups are ESPECIALLY bad at planning because everyone assumes someone else has started. The planning fallacy multiplies with more people.

A FAMOUS EXAMPLE

The Sydney Opera House was originally estimated to take 4 years and cost $7 million. It actually took 16 years and cost $102 million. Even expert planners fall for this!

This isn't just a kid problem. Governments, companies, and experts routinely underestimate timelines. The planning fallacy spares nobody.

Why Your Brain Does This

When you imagine doing a task, your brain pictures the ideal scenario — no interruptions, no mistakes, no surprises. It's like planning a road trip by measuring a straight line on a map instead of following the actual winding roads. Your brain ignores all the bumps, detours, and traffic.

How to Catch Yourself

Ask: "How long did this take LAST time?" Use your past experience, not your optimistic imagination. A simple trick: whatever time you estimate, multiply it by 1.5 or 2. You'll almost always be closer to reality.

Try It!

You tell your parent, "Cleaning my room will take 10 minutes." Think about everything that involves: picking up clothes, making the bed, organizing the desk, vacuuming, putting books away, dealing with the stuff under the bed that you've been ignoring for months...

What's a more realistic estimate? What hidden sub-tasks did your brain skip?

Chapter 11

Groupthink

"We All Agree... Right?"

What Is It?

Groupthink happens when a group values agreement and harmony so much that nobody speaks up with concerns or different ideas. Everyone goes along with the group to avoid conflict, even when they privately disagree. The result? The group makes decisions nobody actually wanted.

PICKING A MOVIE

Friend 1: "Let's watch the new action movie!"
Everyone else: "Sure! Sounds great!"
Later, one by one:
Friend 2: "I actually wanted to watch the comedy..."
Friend 3: "Me too, but I didn't want to be the only one."

NOBODY actually wanted the action movie — they all just went along because they thought everyone else did. This is sometimes called the Abilene Paradox: a group agrees on something nobody wanted.

IN A GROUP PROJECT

Leader: "I think we should do our project on volcanoes. Good?"
Group: (silence, then nods)
What everyone was thinking: "Volcanoes is boring, but I don't want to be the one who disagrees."

Silence gets treated as agreement. Everyone waits for someone else to speak up first, and when nobody does, the group "agrees" on something nobody was excited about.

ABOUT CLOTHING

Friend 1: "Everyone's wearing these new shoes. I'm going to get them."
You: "Yeah... me too." (thinking: "I actually think they're ugly.")
Next week: Everyone in the group has the shoes. Nobody really likes them. But nobody wants to admit it.

Once a group trend starts, it feeds itself. Nobody wants to be the first to say "I don't actually like this" because being different feels risky.

A REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE

The story of "The Emperor's New Clothes" is basically a groupthink fable. Everyone pretends to see the Emperor's fancy clothes because nobody wants to be the one who admits they can't see anything. It takes one kid to say, "He's not wearing any clothes!"

That fairy tale is about groupthink! It shows how powerful the pressure to agree is — and how one brave voice can break the spell.

Why Your Brain Does This

Humans are social animals. Being part of a group kept our ancestors safe. Disagreeing with the group meant risking rejection, which in ancient times could mean danger. So your brain sends strong signals: "Don't rock the boat. Agree. Fit in." The problem? Groups that never disagree make terrible decisions.

How to Catch Yourself

Ask: "Am I agreeing because I actually agree, or because I don't want to be the odd one out?" Before the group discusses, write down your opinion privately. Then compare it to what you said out loud. If they're different, groupthink might be at work.

Try It!

Your friend group is planning what to do this weekend. One friend suggests going to the mall. Everyone immediately says, "Yeah, sounds fun!" But you'd rather go to the park. Do you say something, or just go along?

What would happen if you spoke up? What if everyone else was also secretly hoping for a different plan?

What Is It?

Choice overload (also called the "paradox of choice") is when having too many options makes you worse at deciding, not better. You either freeze up and can't choose at all, make a worse choice because you're overwhelmed, or feel unhappy with what you picked because you keep wondering if another option was better.

Real-Life Brain Bugs

AT A RESTAURANT

Menu: 150 items.
You: (staring at the menu for 20 minutes) "I... don't know what to get."
Waiter: "Can I help?"
You: "Just... pick something for me."

Too many options overloads your brain's decision-making system. Instead of feeling free, you feel paralyzed. A simpler menu with 10 options? You'd pick something in 30 seconds.

ON STREAMING SERVICES

You: (scrolling through 10,000 shows) "There's nothing to watch."
Parent: "There are literally thousands of shows."
You: "I KNOW. That's the problem."

When there were only 5 TV channels, people picked a show and watched it. With unlimited options, you spend more time choosing than watching — and you're less satisfied with what you pick.

THE JAM EXPERIMENT

Famous study: A grocery store set up a tasting table. When they offered 24 types of jam, only 3% of people bought one. When they offered just 6 types, 30% bought one. Ten times more sales from fewer options!

More choices made people LESS likely to decide. Fewer choices made it easy to pick and feel good about it.

Kid: (with 200 games in their library) "I'm bored. There's nothing to play."
Friend: (who owns 3 games) "I've been playing the same game for months and I'm having a blast."

The kid with 200 games spends all their time choosing instead of playing. The kid with 3 games dives in and enjoys the experience because the choice is simple.

SCHOOL PROJECTS

Teacher: "Your project can be about ANYTHING."
Most students: (panic) "Anything?! I don't even know where to start!"
Better prompt: "Pick one of these 5 topics."
Students: "Oh, easy. I'll do number 3."

Complete freedom sounds great but often leads to paralysis. A few constraints actually HELP you make better decisions.

Why Your Brain Does This

Every option requires your brain to evaluate it: "Is this better or worse than the last one?" With 5 options, that's manageable. With 50, your brain runs out of processing power. Plus, more options mean more "paths not taken" to regret. You chose the pizza, but what about the pasta? The salad? The tacos? Each unchosen option becomes a tiny "what if?"

How to Catch Yourself

Ask: "Am I stuck because there are too many options?" If so, try narrowing it down: eliminate everything that's clearly not great, then choose from the top 3. Set a time limit for decisions that don't really matter. And remember: a "good enough" choice made quickly is usually better than a "perfect" choice you never make.

You're at an ice cream shop with 50 flavors. You spend 10 minutes deciding, finally pick cookie dough, and immediately think, "Wait, should I have gotten mint chip?" Meanwhile your friend walked in, ordered vanilla in 5 seconds, and is already happily eating.

One Last Thing

Here's the most important brain bug of all: thinking you're immune to brain bugs. EVERYONE has them. Scientists who study biases still fall for them. Knowing about them doesn't make you immune — it just gives you a fighting chance.

So be patient with yourself. When you catch a brain bug in action, don't feel bad. Feel proud. Catching the glitch IS the skill. Every time you pause and think, "Wait — is my brain tricking me right now?" you're debugging your thinking in real time.
